Lawns, they discover, are extremely simplified ecosystems, dependent upon human intervention to maintain a single species of grass. Entering a volcano-like mound the crew discovers its creator—a giant earthworm, and views the annelid’s anatomy. From these observations they develop theories about the role earthworms play in maintaining terrestrial ecosystems.
